What is obstetrics

Definition

Obstetrics is the medical specialty that focuses on the physiology and pathology of pregnancy, childbirth and the period of gestation. It is designed to ensure a healthy pregnancy, safe labor and full recovery after childbirth.

Main objectives

  • medical follow-up of pregnancy;
  • early detection of complications;
  • assistance during natural childbirth or cesarean section;
  • postnatal care and counseling;
  • emotional support of the mother in the perinatal period.

Pregnancy monitoring

Prenatal consultations

Regular consultations are essential to assess the course of pregnancy, the health of the fetus and the general condition of the mother. The obstetrician checks:

  • blood pressure and weight;
  • development of the uterus and the position of the fetus;
  • fetal cord beats;
  • possible signs of complications.

Consultations are generally carried out:

  • monthly up to 28 weeks;
  • every 2 weeks up to 36 weeks;
  • weekly in the last weeks of pregnancy.

Pregnancy ultrasounds

Obstetric ultrasound is the main method of assessing the fetus. It is carried out in several stages:

  • 1st trimester:confirmation of pregnancy, probable date of birth, verification of fetal heartbeat;

  • 2nd trimester:detailed morphological assessment of fetal organs;

  • III trimester:monitoring fetal growth, position and blood flow (Doppler ultrasound).

Prenatal tests

Depending on the course of pregnancy, the doctor may recommend additional tests:

  • blood and urine tests;
  • genetic screening (double test, triple test, fetal DNA test — NIPT);
  • monitoring blood sugar, thyroid function and blood pressure.

Birth

Natural birth

It is the physiological process by which the fetus is brought into the world by the vaginal route. The obstetrician monitors labor, contractions and the condition of the mother, intervening only when necessary.
The advantages of natural childbirth include faster recovery, lower risk of complications, and a stronger bond between mother and baby immediately after birth.

Birth by caesarean section

It is a surgical intervention performed when natural childbirth is not possible or would present risks. Caesarean section can be scheduled or emergency and is performed under spinal or general anesthesia, in a completely sterile and monitored environment.

Assistance in labor

The obstetrician and the medical team provide continuous support to the mother during labour — monitoring the fetal heartbeat, assessing cervical dilatation and pain control.

Postnatal care

Monitoring of the mother

After delivery, the obstetrician evaluates the involution of the uterus, bleeding, general condition and recovery of the mother. Recommendations on hygiene, nutrition and control are given at 6 weeks postpartum.

Breastfeeding counseling

Patients receive support and information for initiating and maintaining breastfeeding, as well as solutions for discomfort specific to the onset period.

Monitoring the child

In the first days, the doctor checks the newborn's adaptation, weight and vital signs, in collaboration with the neonatologist.

High-risk pregnancy

What does it mean

High-risk pregnancy implies a greater likelihood of complications for the mother or fetus. These cases are managed through collaboration between the obstetrician and the maternal-fetal doctor.

Frequent cases

  • hypertension in pregnancy (preeclampsia);

  • gestational diabetes;

  • placental insufficiency;

  • multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets);

  • negative obstetric history (premature births, miscarriages).

Careful monitoring

More frequent check-ups, Doppler ultrasounds and continuous monitoring of tension, blood sugar and weight are recommended.

Interdisciplinary collaboration

Medical team

The obstetrician collaborates with specialists in maternal-fetal medicine, endocrinology, diabetology, nutrition and neonatology, providing comprehensive care for the mother and fetus.

Role of Counseling

Patients receive clear information about the birth plan, nutrition, recommended exercises and signs that require immediate presentation to the doctor.
